The Tapestry of Terror

Of Strange and Sacred Spaces
Sarah the Kindergartener finds the Lost Athenaeum

It all began while poking around in the old Irons Manse’ barn – where little SJ hangs out in the loft when Jack is being a jerky old boy. When Alice Irons disappears for a time during the day, no one in the family knows where she goes, until she does that disappearing act while Sarah is chilling out in the hay loft. From the upper area she sees her mom open a trapdoor and disappear into weird stairway. Little Sarah, being the sneaky spy she is, poked around until she found the entrance and followed her in. Down the strange stairs little Sarah went, and padded down the corridor after her mommy. Silent as she could be, she watched as Alice opened the wall as if by magic, and then walked through glyph-covered door. Sarah followed Alice, and immediately began exploring.

At five years old, Sarah was a voracious reader, and she started wandering around the massive space and just peeking at all the coolness until Alice caught her. Alice was not mad, paradoxically but instead began explaining the Irons Family history and what the place they were in was. Sarah had discovered the Lost Athenaeum! Everything was okay, Alice said, Sarah was then allowed to come down here anytime Alice was here.

Sarah wandered around and wondered aloud to nobody in particular about the many curiosities in this place. Her thinking aloud was interrupted by the statue in the center of the room coming to life, and answering some of the questions…

The inquisitive little Towers girl makes peace between the alert and afraid Alice, and the strange statue girl. But Alice immediately makes them leave, grabbing Sarah’s hand and half-dragging her to the escalator and out the door they came through…

Overnight her memories of the time in the Lost Athenaeum vanish. Certain clues linger, and some small things in her room vanish. She loses her favorite carved wolf, a white one hand-carved for her by Daddy. The tapes on her shelf are rearranged to spell out a code that translates to “thank you” and a single metal feather is placed on the shelf. That night, after she figures out the code and the feather is placed in a shadow box, two angels visit the house. The first of them is the destroyer angel that met with the five-year-old once before, the second is a messenger angel that seemed at once familiar but unknown. The destroyer noticed that little SJ was not asleep, and ordered her to awaken. Her quick mind takes stock of the situation, and she knows that the winged angel in her room is the one the feather came from, and he is here to get it back. The Angel is, however, a creature of honor and her wolf is returned to her as his feather is retaken. He orders her to forget the encounter, and as he leaves, Sarah asks if it wouldn’t be easier for him to just be “The Dark Man” instead. This throws the Angel for an unexpected loop, and he examines her closely, trying to figure out if she was the one who escaped five years ago, or if she might have been the one he was sent to kill in order to mend the time split several months ago, or if she was someone else entirely. He get the Messenger in the room, turns off her communications relay, and they argue for a minute until she gets the idea ‘that they were never here, and Demons got the jump on them.’ She agrees, only asking “Why her?” to which the Destroyer replies that “She spared me.” He hides his sword in the wall of Sarah’s bedroom and they leave, the destroyer ordering Sarah to never speak of this to anyone, and to leave this lie. But there is one problem, Sarah is starting to remember

The Branching Path
Little Sarah's Journey

In this strange Choose-Your-Own Adventure the infant Sarah is helping her mother Sandra, guiding her in strange ways.  Each Choice is life-or-death for little Sarah… and she knows that being recaptured by the God-Machine and his Angels is not a viable option.

Sarah, who had been connected to the God-Machine since she gained consciousness, chose to disconnect herself and her mother from the God-Machine. While she was Connected she had dreamt of many things as her unconscious connected to the matrix of possible realities the God-Machine could create. She lived through dozens of lifetimes over the course of her pre-natal incarceration, each time trying to escape the confines of her prison by Influencing her mother to wakefulness and rousing her fight-or-flight and maternal instincts. Each life led to trauma and tragedy and eventually the infant Sarah let the dream go and slumbered for a while, growing and changing and being changed by the God-Machine. In her last lifetime she lived twenty seven years and Awakened as a Mage! She fought angels and realized the truth of her family and her past and the Supernal Fire awakened in her burned away the greatest lie of all: that at some point during the dream, Sarah had forgotten she was dreaming…that was when she disconnected from the God-Machine, recognizing its influence as the reason every escape dream had been riddled with pain and trauma and sorrow.

Sarah helped Sandra Escape by influencing her mind up and out of the depths of the Astral Realm and making her realize the horrors she was actually undergoing. Remembering the path through the infernal maze of the God-Machine’s infrastructure, Sarah influenced Sandra like a gut instinct and navigated them through it to the deep woods Sandra had originally disappeared into.

Just like that, Sandra stood on the edge of the highway and had to choose, she was physically 17, mentally she had snapped back to her latest healthy mental state from before her pregnancy & disappearance, and she faced a life-changing decision: go left along the highway to Black River Falls, right along the highway to Tomah, or find a stranger and just go. Sarah Urged Sandra to go to a stranger for help.

Sandra was taken to a truck stop where she met Emma Valgard, and from there Emma took care of Sandra, and surreptitiously noted Sarah's supernatural abilities. After two centuries, Emma knew the shakedown on weirdness and took Sandra to the only Mages she was on friendly terms with – The Irons Family at The Irons Manse in Black River Falls, Wisconsin.

When Emma arrived in Black River Falls, she was shocked to see how the town expanded, and how close the town lines now run toward the farm of her long-dead friend Major Irons. She had her driver take the right roads, but found herself at a crudely made toll-gate. Werewolves allowed Emma onto the grounds, after ascertaining that she was not one of those “wild bloodsuckers” they were fighting. The grounds were no longer Irons family controlled but now run by the Towers Clan, but were somehow still based out of the old Irons Manse. The worst possible scenarios flashed through her mind. She knew the Towers Clan from blood-soaked days of old and knew what they were capable of…

When Emma got to the Irons Manse itself, she met with the last of the Irons family, Alice, and her husband, the leader of the Towers Clan. The group talked long into the night, and eventually they agreed that Sandra will go with Emma after the baby is born, but that the baby, Sarah, will stay with John and Alice. Desirae D’Hart, who had been a long time member of the Towers household as a …ahem… “maid”… expresses a desire to leave with Emma (who is unaware of her Demonic nature) instead of staying any longer, citing a concern that she would not be good around children.

Five Years Later…

Sarah is visited by The Dark Man and asked to choose which timeline continues to exist: either the girl survives or the 27-year-old Mage…she chose the girl.

Human Target

Human Target is the Story of two Covers, the seductress and archaic damsel Desirae d’Hart and the hacker 0bl1v10n (Oblivion), who were released into the world shortly after their Angels Descended after encounters with the Irons Proximus but neither had memories of what their angels did, nor why they began their Descent.

Oblivion is attempting to hack a simple system, set up by someone who is either not very security conscious or somehow just doesn’t understand the internet. The money is good, the job is simple – a cool quarter million just for surreptitiously copying data from one unsecure location to another intensely secure location and the money is his. But as the files move through his data scrubbers as he is closing the system’s backdoor, one file pings his alert system, which is set to gather any data concerning events Oblivion is otherwise investigating. Within an hour people are trying to kill him, and they managed to blow up his hideout…

Miss d’Hart was unconcerned with the boys and men watching as she danced around the edge of the raised stage. She wanted them to look…especially that almost scary looking dark man in the corner, he gazed at her with an almost predatory look. Then she met and danced with a powerful blonde woman who moved past her and then, as if it was nothing, slaughtered a guy with a sword…Desirae ran, and never stopped running…
